• When we talk about the ‘sarees’ form, it is true that its amazing form easily can grab our heart even though the ‘saree’ is a single length of untailored fabric. Usually, this prominent costume would be in a rectangular piece of cloth. Furthermore, its length also around five to nine yards, measuring 115cm Χ 530cm (breath Χ length). The ‘saree’ is not just a long material only but it made of wonderful variety of fabrics, colors and glittery patterns too. For instance, ‘sarees’ are often decorated with checks or stripes, geometric, floral, figurative ornament and other embellishments. Yet, remember, these patterns even could be woven with gold or silver threads, pearls and precious stones into the cloth which will create the exquisite look to the traditional costume tremendously. • According to the French cultural anthropologist and ‘saree’ researcher, Chantal Boulanger, ‘sarees’ can be draped in several ways such as ‘Madisaara style’, ‘Maharastrian style’, ‘Kerala style’, ‘Bengali style’, ‘Assam style’, and so on. Many ways of wearing this traditional dress already exist in India in early days because different regions of India have their own distinct styles of draping a ‘saree’. Therefore, the people around there would wear the ‘saree’ according to the style of their region had from past generation. One thing I need to stress here is that some styles would require a saree of a particular length. For instance, we must have nine yards of a ‘saree’ if we want to drape the saree in ‘Maharastrian’ style. Though, sari researchers said that ‘Nivi style’ is the most common classic style worn by the majority of Indian women especially the Southern people in India and even in Malaysia too. ‘Nivi style’ is the most recognizable for its absolute simplicity, practical comfort, sensuous and stylish. Nevertheless, this famous style also purely believed as today’s most popular saree style ( Dongerkerry K.S. 1959). Then, ‘Nivi style’ also required the women wrapped the ‘saree’ around their waist while the pleats musbe positioned towards the left side neatly and in order. At last, the rest of the ‘saree’ called as ‘pallu’ should be draped over their left shoulder. • In south, silk ‘sarees’ are the more supreme than the other ‘sarees’ because ‘sarees’ mostly woven of silk or cotton only in past times. There are various of ‘sarees’ available in recent times such as Silk sarees, Bangaloore sarees, Cotton sarees, Chiffon sarees, Crepe sarees, Embroidered sarees, Printed sarees and so on. However, ‘silk saree’ always would be the most favourable saree to wear in for any grand social events. For instance, ‘Kanjeevaram saree’ is one of the heavier silk saree which is entirely made for the Indian bridal. Although the ‘sarees’ can be woven of fine cotton or an elegant chiffon textile, but, they truly cannot be equivalent to the shimmering ‘silk sarees’ which is so fascinating to look!
