- In general, ‘sarees’ is one of the Indian traditional attire which has been a great gift from India to the globe. This unique wardrobe really capable in making a woman looks more elegant and graceful when she wrapped her entire body with any gorgeous ‘saree’. In fact, ‘sarees’ usually worn by the Indian women for several kind of purposes as they would wear it during the weddings, ritual ceremonies, parties, and other occasions too. So, now, I stand here to share with you about the complete details of these ‘sarees’ as it would make you to have a deeper understanding on the attire. After all , whoever only had a obvious or bland glance on it previously, then, you might be realize its loveliness and beauty it has until at this moment.
- The existence of ‘saree’ has its own ageless charm since hundreds years ago. Perhaps the origin of the word ‘saree’ is derived from Sanskrit word namely ‘sati’ which means a piece of cloth. However, this strip of cloth seem to be known by different names in various Indian languages. For example, this attire will be pronounced as ‘cheera’ in Telugu while it also known as ‘Sali’ in Hindi, Gujerat, Malayalam and other Indian languages. But it acknowledged as ‘podavai’in Tamil. In real, the Indian costume ‘sarees’ formerly exist during British days in India and, then only, this attire widely worn by everyone in universal. The unstitched fabric ‘saree’ was simply pure because there is a belief that one of the famous ‘sari legends’ has been described in the 5000 year old Indian epic, namely Mahabharat. Hence, ‘saree’ is the most versatile and longest garment which is described as a finest style in history of the Indian women from tedious riddles of years ago.
- When we talk about the ‘sarees’ form, it is true that its amazing form easily can grab our heart even though the ‘saree’ is a single length of untailored fabric. Usually, this prominent costume would be in a rectangular piece of cloth. Furthermore, its length also around five to nine yards, measuring 115cm Χ 530cm (breath Χ length). The ‘saree’ is not just a long material only but it made of wonderful variety of fabrics, colors and glittery patterns too. For instance, ‘sarees’ are often decorated with checks or stripes, geometric, floral, figurative ornament and other embellishments. Yet, remember, these patterns even could be woven with gold or silver threads, pearls and precious stones into the cloth which will create the exquisite look to the traditional costume tremendously. This supreme wardrobe typically were hand-woven but, in recent times ‘sarees’ are more often printed by machines. For example, ‘Nylon sarees’ are the artificial material which made of in a such way. Naturally, the hand-woven sarees are more expensive than the machine imitations. Furthermore, the two accessories called ‘choli’ and ‘petticoat’, plainly make the attire to keep its popularity throughout the centuries. The ‘choli’ and ‘petticoat’ are the upper and lower garment respectively which will hold the shape of the ‘saree’. ‘Choli’ is a matching blouse which ends just below the bust while ‘petticoat’ is a full length skirt that tied at the waist. Thus, the sleeve length of the ‘choli’ can be in form of full sleeves, half sleeves or sleeveless too. It is more advisable, that both garment should be fit tightly to your body as they add a fashion statement to the ‘saree’.
- According to the French cultural anthropologist and ‘saree’ researcher, Chantal Boulanger, ‘sarees’ can be draped in several ways such as ‘Madisaara style’, ‘Maharastrian style’, ‘Kerala style’, ‘Bengali style’, ‘Assam style’, and so on. Many ways of wearing this traditional dress already exist in India in early days because different regions of India have their own distinct styles of draping a ‘saree’. Therefore, the people around there would wear the ‘saree’ according to the style of their region had from past generation. One thing I need to stress here is that some styles would require a saree of a particular length. For instance, we must have nine yards of a ‘saree’ if we want to drape the saree in ‘Maharastrian’ style. Though, sari researchers said that ‘Nivi style’ is the most common classic style worn by the majority of Indian women especially the Southern people in India and even in Malaysia too. ‘Nivi style’ is the most recognizable for its absolute simplicity, practical comfort, sensuous and stylish. Nevertheless, this famous style also purely believed as today’s most popular saree style ( Dongerkerry K.S. 1959). Then, ‘Nivi style’ also required the women wrapped the ‘saree’ around their waist while the pleats musbe positioned towards the left side neatly and in order. At last, the rest of the ‘saree’ called as ‘pallu’ should be draped over their left shoulder. For your information, the ‘pallu’ often called as a border which generally has various extensive designs or embroidery woven into it.
- In south, silk ‘sarees’ are the more supreme than the other ‘sarees’ because ‘sarees’ mostly woven of silk or cotton only in past times. There are various of ‘sarees’ available in recent times such as Silk sarees, Bangaloore sarees, Cotton sarees, Chiffon sarees, Crepe sarees, Embroidered sarees, Printed sarees and so on. When we talk about the ‘cotton’ saree, you might be cross with a question that, what cotton saree is? It looks simple but it will make you comfort when you wear it. However, ‘silk saree’ always would be the most favourable saree to wear in for any grand social events. For instance, ‘Kanjeevaram saree’ is one of the heavier silk saree which is entirely made for the Indian bridal. Although the ‘sarees’ can be woven of fine cotton or an elegant chiffon textile, but, they truly cannot be equivalent to the shimmering ‘silk sarees’ which is so fascinating to look!
- All in all, ‘sarees’ is the very fashionable traditional costume for the every Indian women from all ages, making them even look better. This stylish saree has retained its beauty over decades in the world. Once again, I would to say that this piece of clothing really appealing to all for its colorfulness and grace. As you know, ‘sarees’ fit to all shapes of body no matter you fat or thin and short or tall!!! So far, the great Indian costume ‘sarees’ is Indian women’s statement to the world as it bring out the essence of feminism eternally!!! Thank you...hopefully all of you reaalize the beauty of 'saree' it has in indian women history until today...
